Horses: Wild and Tame

"Morning Run"   Going to water....
We have been photographing wild horses the past five years on a regular basis year round. Nothing is more fascinating than getting to know them as individuals and their bands. How these horses survive in the high desert country of the Great Basin is pretty much a miracle. Harsh conditions, drought stricken waterholes, overcrowding, and a large increase in predators (mostly coyotes) are taking a toll on each individual horse.

It is sad to see such beautiful animals in distress...not enough food and water, even in the areas where cattle grazing has not been allowed for two seasons. Most reservoirs have been dry by early summer the past two seasons, and all but the best springs have significantly reduced water flow.  Deer and antelope are suffering too. Of course there are exceptions, but not very many. If you disregard the politics relating to wild horse management, the bottom line is that things are not working out well for these magnificent animals no matter which side of the political fence you are on.
